Today, I wanted to share a bit of my own journey with you, especially for those of you who might be feeling a bit apprehensive about getting back into training after some time off. Trust me, I know exactly what that feels like.
A few years ago, I took a pretty substantial break from training BJJ. Life got busy, and what was supposed to be a short hiatus turned into a three-year absence. When I finally decided to come back, I was filled with all sorts of doubts and fears. As a brown belt, I knew people would expect me to be at the same standard as the other brown belts in the gym. The thought of stepping back onto the mat was downright daunting.
I remember my first day back vividly. Walking into the gym, I felt like a complete newbie again. My heart was racing, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that everyone was watching me, wondering why I wasn’t as sharp or as fast as I used to be. It was intimidating, to say the least. But you know what? Those fears were mostly in my head.
The first few sessions were tough. My timing was off, my cardio was nowhere near where it used to be, and my techniques felt rusty. I was constantly comparing myself to the other brown belts and even to my former self. It was frustrating and humbling. But instead of letting that frustration get the better of me, I used it as fuel. I reminded myself why I loved BJJ in the first place and focused on the journey rather than the destination.
Slowly but surely, things started to click again. I stopped worrying about what others thought and started to enjoy the process of learning and improving. My coaches and training partners were incredibly supportive, and I realised that no one was judging me as harshly as I was judging myself. They were just happy to see me back and training.
Fast forward a bit, and not only did I get back to my peak form, but I also earned my Black Belt. It’s one of my proudest achievements, and it wouldn’t have been possible if I had let my fear of judgment keep me from returning to the mat.
So, why am I telling you this? Because I know many of you might be feeling the same way about returning to CrossFit. Whether you’ve taken a break due to injury, life getting in the way, or just lost motivation, it’s completely normal to feel nervous about coming back. But just like in my BJJ journey, the hardest part is taking that first step.
Here are a few tips that helped me push through those initial hurdles and can help you get back into CrossFit:
Don’t expect to be where you left off. Give yourself grace and time to rebuild your skills and fitness.
Focus on small, achievable goals rather than the bigger picture. Celebrate the little victories along the way.
Progress takes time. Don’t rush the process or compare yourself to others.
Talk to your coaches and training partners. Let them know how you’re feeling. You’ll find that they’re more supportive than you think.
Remember why you started training in the first place and try to recapture that joy and passion.
Getting back into training after a break can be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. I’m living proof that it’s possible to come back even stronger than before. So, don’t let the fear of judgment hold you back. Lace up your shoes, chalk up your hands, and get back to the gym. You’ve got this!
If you ever need someone to talk to or train with, you know where to find me. Let’s crush those goals together.
